This year in June, set against the picturesque backdrop of Cannes, the city will host the 64th Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. The event attracts more than 15,000 people from over 100 countries. In addition to the renowned awards ceremony, the festival hosts hundreds of industry speakers, networking events and specialised sub-events, such as this year’s Lions Health, Lions Innovation and Lions Entertainment. It was recently announced that 390 people from 50 countries, will comprise the jurors to determine the award winners from over 40,000 entries.
The event was born as a result of cinema advertisers and producers, represented by the Screen Advertising World Association, feeling that their work was not recognised similarly to that of the Cannes Film Festival. The first event (then named the International Advertising Film Festival) was held in Venice in 1954. The iconic lion represented on the prestigious Cannes trophy is inspired by the statue in Piazza San Marco. Apart from the second festival which has held in Monte Carlo, it has been hosted alternately between Venice and Cannes until 1984, after which Cannes has remained its home.
